Philips is proud to be part of Live Earth. The time to take action in the fight against climate change is now. Were doing just that and invite you to join us. Philips shows that energy efficient solutions are simple, easy and actionable as well as making economic sense for national and local governments, businesses and individuals. Its simple to switch your household bulbs, or your commercial office or street lighting to one of the energy saving alternatives available today.
How would this help? Consider the facts:
- 19% of global electricity is used for lighting.
- An achievable energy saving of 40% on all the lighting currently installed globally would save 555 million tonnes of CO2, thats 1,560 million barrels of oil per year
- 75% of all lighting is in the professional sector - Offices, Shops, Street lighting etc.
Taking the lead
With our number-one position in global lighting, we have been taking the lead in promoting a switch to new energy efficient lighting. On December 7th 2006 Philips called for joint action between industry, non-governmental organizations, energy suppliers and governments to replace the incandescent light bulb with the many energy-saving alternatives available today - alternatives that cut greenhouse gas emissions. We started this initiative in Europe, where the switch-over could happen within 10 years. In March a coalition including Philips announced it would try to eliminate incandescents in about 10 years in the United States, seeking efficiency standards at the local, state and federal levels.
Improving peoples lives
At Philips concern for people and our environment is not new for us - its part of our DNA. When they founded the company in 1891, Anton and Gerard Philips knew that by daring to make conscious choices that would improve the lives of people both inside and outside the company, they would be successful. Today, we are living up to that heritage and our commitment to improve the quality of people’s lives with meaningful innovations.
